Today is July 1st. Happy Canada Day (it is also Deep Fried Clams Day, Zip Code Day and International Joke Day, no joke)! Equally exciting, it’s the start of the new fiscal year for many colleges across North America. That means that today marks the official start date for many new faculty. Others will start in August or September just a few weeks prior to the semester. The #newPI cycle continues.
Last year, I started writing more intentionally for other new lab leaders. These posts are inspired by challenges I’ve faced as a PI and by questions I often get from junior colleagues about how I handle different topics.
Coming up, I am going to dive a bit more into graduate student recruitment, the joy of “adventure working”, teaching, and how I manage my digital life.
What do you want to hear more about this year? Whether you are starting this Fall or have been in the role for a few years, what’s on your mind? Please share in the comments. Depending on interest and demand, I may also bring in guest writers.
If you have a collegue that you believe would benefit from reading these posts, please share it with them.
Feel free to also subscribe to receive these posts to your inbox (you can change settings in Substack to adjust how you want to receive updates).
Student / postdoc recruitment would be very helpful! Especially reaching narrower audiences (eg math-focused students) and students who are more independent. Loving the series, many thanks!!
